Drafting 11/12

2023-2024 School Year

Tools: Google SketchUp, Blender

This year, having the benefit of a full senior class, I aligned our focus to architecture and floor planning. We looked at principles of design such as modular design, symmetry, sustainable design, light, and biomimicry and students were tasked with applying that understanding in their projects.

The final model had to include both interior and exterior details. Students had to document their design process which included interior floor plans as well as concept drawings for the exterior.

As a lead-in for this project I taught students how to use Blender to create floorplans that included simulated lighting and animated walkthroughs.

2022-2023 School Year

Tools: Fusion360

Students learned traditional drafting techniques as well as modern 3D design using Fusion 360.

One of my projects taught students about components, assemblies, and dimensioning in Fusion360. Students created a model of a wooden stool based on an example provided by the woodshop teacher. Students in the woodworking class were then able to use the design drawings created in Fusion360 to measure, cut, and build stools out of pine.

Project exemplar

The final project for this year was a lighting design project. Students had to create working physical prototypes based on their own creative ideas. They were also required to document their design process, create 3d models and dimensioned drawings.

Students particularly enjoyed the opportunity to experiment with the 3D printer and laser cutter as seen in two of the examples below.
